# Voice

> Talk in real-time with the people in a room you're already chatting in.

Voice is live. It runs **inside a chat room** rather than as a separate voice
directory: open the room you want in the social widget, then start a call.

## Starting a call

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the social widget">
    Open the widget and go to the **Chat** tab.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick a room">
    Rooms are scoped to where you are — see [Chat rooms](/social/overview#chat-rooms).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start the call">
    Press **Start call** in the room header. Anyone else in that room can join the
    same call. Press **Leave call** to drop out; the text chat carries on either
    way.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  A call belongs to the room, not to you. Leaving the call does not leave the room,
  and closing the widget does not end the call for everyone else.
</Note>

## FAQ

### Is there a separate list of voice rooms?

No. Voice attaches to chat rooms, so the room list *is* the voice list — you join a
room and start or join its call.

### Do I need to install anything?

No. Calls run in the browser. Your browser will ask for microphone permission the
first time.

### Can I be in more than one call?

No. Starting a call in another room leaves the current one.
